Keen history buffs on cheap flights to South Africa will be amazed by the site of the Battle of Magersfontein, which is located just outside the Northern Cape town of Kimberley.
The battle took place during the second Anglo-Boer War on December 11th 1899.
Won by the Boers, it became known as Britain’s ‘Black Week’.
It was an absolute disaster for the British army. Over 200 British soldiers were killed during the battle, which nearly wiped out Scotland’s entire Highland Brigade.
Visitors can take a tour of the battlefield with an experienced guide and military historian on call to bring to life the story of the devastating and costly battle.
It is claimed that if you listen closely enough, on moonlit nights, you may be able the music of the phantom Scottish piper.
The tour includes a visit to the graves of some of the brave Boer soldiers and a look at the trenches that were dug up during the conflict, before stopping at the Burgher Monument.
