Locals as well as people on holidays to Cape Town over the weekend are likely to have been thrilled with the opening ceremony of the five-week Indian Premier League (IPL) tour.

According to Sify.com, African acrobats performed at Cape Town’s Newlands stadium prior to the games beginning, while “dazzling fireworks” and performances by traditional drummers rendered the opening ceremony “glittering”.

The IPL teams are to stay at the five-star One and Only resort, which houses celebrity restaurants Nobu and Maze, while celebrities in attendance include Shilpa Shetty, England batsman Kevin Pietersen and his wife, forber Dancing on Ice contestant Jessica Taylor.

The IPL is a Twenty20 cricket tournament and is the most watched competition of its kind in the world.

Due to Indian presidential elections, the decision was made to host this year’s events in South Africa. Britain was also in the running, but was eliminated due to the possibility of bad weather.
