Virgin Australia, in code share with Singapore Airlines’ regional unit, SilkAir, will offer flights to India. Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram are the Indian destinations that will be served.
Making the most of its alliance with Singapore Airlines, Virgin Australia is hoping to introduce flights to India in codeshare with SQ’s wholly owned subsidiary, SilkAir.
A Virgin Australia’s spokesperson is said to have confirmed that few SilkAir flights between Singapore and India have been earmarked for Virgin Australia codesharing, as listed in the global distribution system (GDS) used by tour and travel agents and reported by Airline Route.
As per reports, the Indian destinations that will see Virgin Australia / Silk Air codeshare are Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram. Most of these cities are top holiday destinations that are huge hits among foreign leisure vacationers who vie for cheap flights to India.
While the Airline Route expects these flights to be offered “in the near term”, it also states that “Singapore – India service remains subject to Government Approval, therefore reservation is not available.”
Virgin Australia already has a code share with SilkAir’s service on the new Singapore-Darwin service, which began operations in March 2012, along with Singapore Airlines’ flights to Singapore, China and South Africa.
Virgin Australia Airlines, formerly known as Virgin Blue Airlines, is one of Australia’s largest airlines with its hubs at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne airports. The airline currently serves approximately 50 local and international destinations.
A Singapore-based airline, SilkAir is a regional offshoot of Singapore Airlines and operates scheduled passenger services from Singapore to more than 30 cities in Southeast Asia, South Asia and China.
