Many Brits leave booking their holidays to the last minute, according to new research.A study from Sainsbury’s discovered 1.28 million people waited until just two weeks before jetting off in order to find the best prices for cheap flights to Dubai and other destinations.

Some 290,000 people even left their holiday booking to less than 48 hours before departure as they shopped around for the very best deals.

The research also concluded that £5.46 billion of holiday expenditure over summer will be placed on credit cards so that it can be paid-off over the rest of the year.

Stuart McKeggie, head of Sainsbury’s credit cards, explained: “Credit cards can be a great way of spreading the cost of your holiday.

“However, if you don’t think you will be able to clear this within a month, you should consider taking out a new credit card that offers an attractive interest-free period.”

Last month, the Guardian reported that many travel firms could be set to offer a number of bargain deals this year due in part to the Icelandic ash cloud and the recent emergency Budget.
