Anyone who decides to explore the seaside town should make sure that they check out some of the shops on its main street.
He particularly advised paying a visit to the local museum and the Barwon Bookshop, which he described as “suitably musty”.
Another must-see attraction for first-time visitors is Fort Queenscliff, Mr Carroll stated. Although it is still a functioning army base, there are tours for travellers three times per day, he informed.
Those taking holidays to Australia with their children in July and August may find that the kids programme being run by the Marine Discovery Centre in Queenscliff could keep the little ones occupied.
Among the scheduled activities are canoeing trips, rockpool rambles and craft sessions.
