Having a holiday that helps to support the local community and environment does not have to come at a high price.

Having a holiday that is socially responsible to the local people and the environment may not be as expensive as people might think.

By simply making a couple of changes to some of the things you do on holiday could have a big impact on the people who make their living in the area.

Offering advice, Alex Lyons, Responsible Tourism Awards manager at responsibletravel.com, explained there is a myth that this sort of holiday has to be expensive.

“It doesn’t have to cost any more to source local goods, encourage people to try out a local place to eat or take a tour with someone who has actually grown up in and knows the area,” Mr Lyons said.

He added that these choices could actually work out cheaper than picking options produced overseas for the mass tourism market.

Countries like Thailand can offer a great range of locally-created products, with the food sold at local restaurants and stalls helping to give people a taste of authentic Thai cuisine.
