Saving money on holidays could be easier than many people think, according to one travel writer.

In an article for Travel Mail, Fred Mawer recommended that travellers should look at add-ons as a potential means of cutting costs in ways that may not have been immediately obvious.

These included booking ahead for the airport car park, or using an off-airport car park to further slash rates.

In addition, he advocated being frugal when it comes to texting on holiday, since many operators charge up to four times as much to send a message from abroad as they would in the UK.

“You can knock hundreds off the total bill of going away by minimising what you pay for mundane things such as travel insurance and airport parking, getting foreign currency and using your mobile phone,” Mr Mawer said.

Anyone looking to save money on holidays to Australia is advised by Theo Brandt-Sarif – author of Guerrilla Travel Tactics – to plan as far in advance as possible, preferably booking air travel around 330 days ahead of the desired travel date, in order to get the best savings.
