The weather in this part of the world is usually snowy and extremely cold and much of the time it’s not possible to visit K2. July and August are generally considered to be the best months for visiting K2 as the weather is warmer and generally more stable. Of course, with only two months of the year in which K2 is accessible, you will invariably need to book in advance. The skies will generally be clear in this period, which is important because you want to make the most of the spectacular scenery.

 

However, if you can’t get there in July or August, the general trekking season to K2 base camp is a little longer, extending between mid-June to mid-September. Outside of these three months, there is generally too much snow to make approaching the mountain feasible. Anyone visiting K2 should always be prepared for changeable mountain weather – freezing conditions and snow can happen at any moment when you are this high up. The trek to K2 usually starts from a village called Askole and takes around two weeks.

 

You will also need a permit to trek to or climb K2. Following the pandemic, there has been a surge in applications for K2 permits, so make sure you plan ahead. There are a number of factors that foreigners wishing to make this trip should know about. First of all, you will need to apply for a permit through NADRA, Pakistan’s official portal for visas. Foreigners may need a visa to enter Pakistan as well. Most travellers will also require a licensed mountain guide for their journey and will need an NOC, or No Objection Certificate, which is obtainable from the Skardu tourism office in Pakistan.

Peshawar is a little further from the mountain but is also an excellent choice as it is the capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and offers fantastic scenery and outdoor pursuits. Lahore is a little further south but a visit here will be richly rewarded in exploring the diverse heritage this historic city near the India border offers. Karachi is a bustling megacity and has many sights to see and you can always travel overland from this coastal city to the mountainous region where you’ll find K2.
