A large number of people in Britain claim they do not intend to take out any travel insurance for this year’s holidays.

This was discovered in a survey carried out by Sainsbury’s, which found that the worst age group for not taking out a policy was the 55 to 64-year-olds.

Some 31 per cent claimed they did not need travel insurance, while 18 per cent said they cannot afford it.

Steve Johnson, head of insurance at Sainsbury’s Finance, said the results were concerning and that people should see travel insurance as a holiday essential in the same vein as their passport.

“If something happens to you or your family while you’re abroad, you need to know that you have adequate cover in place to take care of things, whether it’s to reimburse you for lost or stolen belongings, to pay for any medical treatment you may need or even to cover the cost of flying home early as a result of an emergency,” he commented.

The advice echoes that given by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office this week, after their research found that people, especially those on holidays to Thailand, are continuing to get into trouble and require hospitalisation abroad.
