Travellers who visit destinations away from Europe and the west should take care to understand the local laws and customs before they travel, a new report has suggested.
According to a study by travelsupermarket.com, a lack of understanding of local cultures was blamed for nine per cent of travellers being accused of reckless behaviour whilst on a holiday in Dubai or other destinations.
The research also found that 33 per cent of UK holidaymakers admitted to taking more risks whilst on holiday in a foreign destination compared to when they are at home.
“People need to be aware of the culture and customs of the destination that you’re in whereby behaviour which is acceptable in the UK may not be acceptable in that destination,” explained Bob Atkinson, travel expert at the company.
For example, according to Justlanded.com, travellers on holiday in Dubai should keep their feet flat on the ground at all times and not cross their legs.
This is so that the soles of the feet are not on display, which can be a sign of offense in the country and suggests a low opinion of another person.
