The Great Barrier Reef is the best place in the world to visit for a scuba diving holiday, it has been claimed.
Tourists who take the plunge will be rewarded with a reef “teeming with thousands of species of marine life, a massive area of multi-hued coral reefs and miles and miles of turquoise waters”.
But although the Australian destination was top of the list, the Red Sea came in at number five and could be a good choice for Brits looking for cheap flights to a location closer to home.
With Dahab in the north of Egypt offering spectacular reef formations such as the Blue Hole and the Canyon and the Ras Mohammed national park in the waters near Sharm el Sheikh, there will be plenty to keep water babies happy.
And truly intrepid scuba divers may want to spend an entire week aboard a boat to allow them to visit the southern Red Sea and dive sites such as Elphinstone Reef and The Brothers.
