People going on holiday soon, particularly those aged 55 or above, have been urged to spend plenty of time making sure that they have the appropriate insurance cover for their trip.
Specialist insurer RIAS pointed out that many people see travel insurance as something to quickly get over and done with, or even worse, neglect entirely, which is a high-risk option.
It cited the example of one woman who had fallen and broken bones while abroad and would have faced medical and repatriation bills of tens of thousands of pounds had she not been covered.
Janet Connor, spokesperson for RIAS, said: “Travel insurance, particularly for the over 50s, should be considered an essential purchase, as important as arranging visas, vaccinations and currency.”
She added that policies should always be tailored to suit the individual trip rather than bought as a ‘one size fits all’ product.
Financial services provider esure recently discovered that as many of 20 per cent of travellers would consider going without insurance in order to cut costs.
