South Africa has become one of the most popular places for gap year travellers to visit during their time overseas.
South Africa has become a firm favourite destination among gap year travellers who are looking for adventure, according to one industry expert.
Alice Baines, overseas placement manager with Year Our Group, explained the country is now seeing a huge amount of interest from people looking to spend time in the country.
She explained that the 2010 World Cup helped to boost the profile of the country among young people, as it was introduced to many as a holiday destination for the first time.
It also has a broad appeal for people looking to work during their trip.
“South Africa has wonderful opportunities with wildlife but also opportunities for community development and a wide range of project work which lends itself very well to a gap year and people with diverse interests,” Ms Baines added.
The size of South Africa means it is possible to see a diverse range of landscapes, with the wine regions of the Western Cape contrasting with the stunning mountain ranges of KwaZulu-Natal.
