Recent tiger sightings have made the Sunderbans very popular with tourists.
Two recent tiger sightings have seen a rush of tourists flock to the Sunderbans.
Spotting a big cat in the wild is a rare experience for most people and two successive sightings at Pirkhali on Saptami and Ashthami have got tourists in the region very excited.
“The word seems to have spread quickly for we have been getting loads of tourists ever since. Everybody is keen to visit Pirkhali,” said Subrat Mukherji, field director at the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve.
According to the region’s wildlife experts, October to December is the prime time to see tigers in the Sunderbans.
Officials told the Times of India that the mangrove forest usually receives around 80,000 tourists in the post monsoon season, but this year the figure could touch 130,000.
The easiest way for overseas tourists to get to the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve would be to catch a flight to Kolkata and then travel by rail to the World Heritage site.
