A replica of some Ajanta caves will be built in Maharashtra.

Mumbai and its surrounding Maharashtra state is already one of the most popular tourist hotspots in the whole of India.

As one of the most populous cities on Earth, there is plenty to see and do, whether interests lie in the huge Bollywood film industry or seeing historical monuments like the Gateway of India.

However, soon there will be even more attractions in the region as the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation has confirmed that it will not merely be producing replicas of the famous paintings in the Ajanta caves, reports the Times of India.

By April next year, a new visitor centre will house exact replicas of the caves themselves, which will not only mitigate the deterioration of the ancient rock formations, but allow tourists to spend more time studying the paintings and sculptures.

The Ajanta caves are an Unesco World Heritage site which contain pieces of ancient Buddhist artwork.
