There has been a surge in tourists opting to visit Dubai, according to new figures.Data from the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has revealed a nine per cent increase in visitor numbers in the first six months of 2010 compared to the same period last year.

There has been a three per cent increase in European travellers, with visitors from the UK accounting for the largest proportion.

Those taking cheap flights to Dubai may also be pleased with the growth in accommodation on offer in the region, as the total number of hotels increased to 566 – up from the 530 operating in 2009.

DTCM director general Khalid Ahmed Bin Sulayem explained Dubai remains a popular tourist destination even though there has been a global decline within the industry.

He added that the strong private sector has helped and the growth “would not have been possible without their sincere efforts and co-operation, especially given the challenges faced by the global tourism industry in general”.

Dubai has benefited from substantial investment its transport network in recent years. In particular, holidaymakers have made regular use of the Dubai Metro which stops inside terminals 1 and 3 of Dubai International Airport.
