Dubai has seen an increase in visitors during 2010 as the UAE state continues to prove popular with international holidaymakers.

Figures from the department of tourism and commerce marketing showed that a total of 8.6 million people visited Dubai last year compared to 7.8 million in 2009 – an increase of 10.3 per cent.

There was also an increase in tourism revenue, with the industry attracting a total of Dh 12.2 billion (£2.4 billion) in 2010, 6.45 per cent more than the Dh12.4 billion reported in the previous year.

Those taking flights to Dubai may also benefit from the rise in hotel rooms available to tourists, with the total hotels in the state now standing at 382 – 30 more than in 2009.

Peter Goddard, managing director of Dubai-based TRI Hospitality Consulting, explained the local department of tourism has focused on promoting the Emirate to new markets overseas and this has boosted interest from a number of international countries.

Dubai is ideal for those looking for a spot of winter sun with a mean daily maximum of 24 degrees Celsius in January rising to 41 Celsius degrees in July.
