According to the Global Language Monitor, a company that tracks the frequency of words and phrases in the media, on the internet and throughout the blogosphere, many new locations are rising through the ranks to become strong contenders in the world of fashion.

Although New York, Rome, Paris, Milan and London took the top five places, Dubai climbed 12 places to reach number 12 in the list of top fashion cities.

Sydney also climbed five places to claim seventh place, reports Reuters.

Millie Lorenzo Payack, a director at the Global Language Monitor, said: “The second tier of the cities in the world fashion rankings are coming on strong. And, by the way, money spent on media outreach can, indeed, make a difference; witness Dubai.”

Last week, it was revealed that Karl Lagerfield, one of the world’s leading fashion designers, is to be part of a project called Isla Moda – Fashion Island – which will open in the resort in 2011 and is to include haute couture boutiques, villas and a 250-room luxury hotel with themed rooms.
