Containing some 63,000 works of art, the National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and largest public art gallery in the country.
According to the international Art Newspaper, the Melbourne attraction is the most visited art gallery in Australia and is also ranked in the top 25 most popular art museums on the planet, with 1.48 million visitors passing through its doors in 2007-08.
The Melbourne tourist board claims the museum may be the only location in the world to possess a portrait of the “infamous” Lucrezia Borgia.
Melbourne is also home to the largest museum in the whole of the southern hemisphere – Museum Victoria – and was named a City of Literature by Unesco last year.
A special exhibition showing works by Australian artist John Brack is running at the National Gallery Victoria until August 9th.
