The Kununurra visitor centre – close to where much of the action took place and the region where Nicole Kidman was said to have fallen pregnant with daughter Sunday Rose – has reported a 50 per cent increase in the number of people visiting its website in the first quarter of 2009.

“Now Luhrmann’s Australia has put the Kimberley firmly on the map and inspired filmgoers to experience the epic beauty of the towering gorges and lush waterholes themselves,” said James Herbert, Australia Pacific Tourism’s commercial manager for the UK and Europe.

According to Tourism Australia, the Cockburn Range, Digger’s Rest Station, Purnululu National Park, the King George River and Falls, El Questro Wilderness Park, Carlton Hill Station and Home Valley Station are were the main film locations for the film in the region.

The film Australia starred Nicole Kidman, David Wenham and Hugh Jackman – who was voted People Magazine’s sexiest man of 2009.
