A worldwide survey carried out by Visa and the Pacific Asia Travel Association has revealed that holidays to Australia are the top choice for people hoping to travel between now and next year.

Some 43 per cent of people said they would prefer to go Down Under than anywhere else in the Asia-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, the research also discovered that British people were among the most likely to see travel as a right not a privilege and were therefore unlikely to cancel their plans.

Meranda Chan, Visa country manager, said: “While the global economic situation will impact tourism, it is unlikely to bring travel to a standstill. What our survey has shown is that travellers will be more creative in their selection of destinations.”

Indeed, holidays to Australia may work out cheaper in the long run than other destinations, since it is outside the eurozone. There is also plenty of cheap accommodation available thanks to its popularity with gap year students.
