People who want to visit a country and give something back may be interested in a selection of the top volunteering trips available, according to one newspaper.

Anyone who wants to have a holiday which gives something back to the local community should consider booking flights to Thailand and participating in a volunteering break.Writing in the Observer, Emma John picked out ten of the best voluntourism trips around the world, including one in the south-east Asian nation.

She recommended helping at one of the country’s elephant sanctuaries during a stay in Thailand.

“Volunteers work alongside professional mahouts (keepers) to walk, water, feed and bathe the animals,” Ms John explained.

The centre in Tha Yang, which is approximately two and a half hours outside the capital Bangkok, is home to six elephants that have been rescued.

As well as looking after the elephants, the wildlife rescue centre is also home to a host of other animals that have been taken out of environments where they were being mistreated.

The Personal Overseas Development organisation notes that tigers, monkeys and sun bears are among the other creatures being cared for at the facility.
