An increasing number of people are booking cheap flights and jetting off on their own, according to one travel expert.

There has been a rise in the number of people travelling on their own, one travel journalist has asserted.

Dan Linstead, editor at Wanderlust, explained that there are a number of benefits to going it alone when it comes to travelling, including making new friends, becoming more confident and trying different experiences.

He also commented that “the sense of freedom is addictive”.

According to Mr Linstead, holidaying alone is not only for single people and many couples are now deciding to take separate breaks to pursue different interests.

He attributed this trend to the increasing number of small tour operators offering specialist trips abroad.

Research released earlier this month by Leger Holidays backs up Mr Linstead’s comments.

The company found that half of the UK’s population have chosen to travel alone at some point, irrespective of their relationship status.

Of the respondents who had never jetted off on their own, 56 per cent stated that they would be happy to do so in future.
