Anyone who has booked flights to India may be interested to learn that the country’s tour operators have received a record number of nominations for this year’s World Travel Awards.

People who are jetting off on flights to India for their holidays will no doubt be pleased to hear that the country’s tourism industry has performed well at the nominations stage of the World Travel Awards.

According to Grahame Cooke, founder and president of the organisation, India is in a good position.

“The quality and quantity of nominees within the Indian categories has surpassed all previous years,” he said.

India and its state of Goa are both in the running for Asia’s leading destination category, while the country is also among the nominees for the best sports destination award.

Hosting the Commonwealth Games later this year may well provide a boost to India’s chances of winning in this regional category.

Winners of the regional awards will be announced in October, before going on to compete in the World Travel Awards Final 2010, which is due to be held in London.

Mr Cooke noted that India is “undoubtedly a very strong competitor” within the tourism industry this year.
