Dubai Airport is now the world’s sixth busiest, due to impressive growth over the last year, new statistics show.

Dubai Airport has made it into the top six busiest air transport hubs in the world for the first time ever, it has emerged.

Those disembarking from their cheap flights to Dubai may be pleased to hear that the destination is thriving, as Dubai International Airport has undergone significant growth in recent times, according to official figures from the hub.

Despite the economic crisis over the last year, Dubai Airport has gone from strength to strength, the figures show, experiencing a 12.6 per cent rise in passengers in July when compared to the previous year.

In 2008, its passenger and cargo traffic also grew by nine per cent.

“Around 40 per cent of the world’s population lives within four hours flying time of Dubai and 80 per cent live within 12 hours,” explained Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer of Dubai Airports.

Some airlines that operate from the hub include Emirates, Air Finland, Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines.
