People taking longer trips abroad or gap years need to make sure that they are adequately covered with travel insurance.

People heading away for a gap year on cheap flights to Australia or other locations have been advised on the importance of taking out proper travel insurance first.

John Lawler, operations manager at Madventurer.com, explained a vital step people need to make before leaving is having the proper injections at the GP first.

“The more remotely you go, the more likely it is that you won’t have access to things like fridges to keep medication cold if there are any health issues,” Mr Lawler said.

He added that it is important to be honest about any medical conditions which could come up on travel insurance, as it could cause more problems if something related to the illness occurs during a holiday.

The importance of getting cover before taking cheap flights to Australia and other locations was recently highlighted in a study from Abta – the travel association, which found that 21 per cent of people wrongfully think the government will cover foreign healthcare costs.
