With a recent study by AfterBurn sun gel finding that 63 per cent of people would not move from the sun even if their skin felt hot and 39 per cent would only seek a shady spot if their skin had already gone red, a doctor has offered some tips on how to not end up like a lobster on holiday.

With a recent study by AfterBurn sun gel finding that 63 per cent of people would not move from the sun even if their skin felt hot and 39 per cent would only seek a shady spot if their skin had already gone red, a doctor has offered some tips on how to not end up like a lobster on holiday.

Writing for the Telegraph, Dr Max Pemberton said that sunburn is always preventable and holidaymakers can avoid it by taking simple precautions.

“The best way to protect against it is by using a high-factor sunscreen cream and avoiding the midday sun. Wearing light clothing and gradually exposing the skin is also recommended,” he said.

Dr Pemberton added that people should also wear t-shirts while snorkelling, as their sun cream may rub off and the sun could reflect onto the skin off the sea’s sandy bottom.

Those going on holidays to Australia may wish to pay particular attention to this advice, since the SunSmart website claims that sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes on some days.
