Many Brits are probably dreaming of jetting off to warmer countries to escape the cold winter weather, but some of us are being overly optimistic when we think about the weather elsewhere, it has been found.

The cold winter experienced in Britain has resulted in many  travellers believing that the places they are set to visit will be hotter than they actually are, new research has found.

A survey carried out by Primelocation International discovered that many people are over-estimating temperatures abroad, Wanderlust magazine reported.

For example, 95 per cent of respondents estimated Sydney’s average summertime temperature above its 26 degrees C, while 94 per cent were also overly optimistic about Auckland’s summer weather.

However, the study also revealed that destinations closer to home were expected to be colder than they actually are, with many people under-estimating Nice’s winter temperature by up to five degrees C.

The company also found that 86 per cent of British holidaymakers will take the weather into account when selecting a destination.

Earlier this year, Sydney hit the headlines when the city experienced its hottest summer in years, with temperatures regularly reaching more than 40 degrees C in February.
