According to research released this week, many holidaymakers are not regulating their finances at the airport as closely as they would at home.

Co-operative Bank Credit Cards found that the average person will spend £18 on luxuries before they set foot on the plane, amounting to £72 per family.

Food and drink were the most-purchased items, with 84 per cent of people saying they would succumb to spending on such goods. In addition, 35 per cent of people went for duty-free items and 60 per cent treated themselves to books and magazines.

Maxine Xodo, product manager for credit cards at the Co-operative Bank, said: “The findings clearly show that despite the current economic climate, after working hard all year many people are reluctant to cut back on their summer holiday spending.”

Anyone still looking for a thrifty summer break could consider booking flights to Thailand, which can be used as a base for group eco-holidays. The breaks are becoming increasingly popular as people seek to decrease their carbon footprint and save money.
