Kenya is mostly associated with its bountiful wildlife spotting avenues and not many people know this stunning country for its breathtaking shores, lined by some of the finest beaches that exist in the world. For the curious ones looking to explore Kenya beyond its national parks, here are top five beaches in Kenya that have visitors returning for more:

Kenya-Top-Beaches

Watamu

Located in an eponymous village, just 20 minutes of drive away from Malindi, Watamu beach calls out to travellers seeking unspoiled natural beauty. Part of a protected Marine National Park, the beach offers unparalleled opportunities for snorkelling and diving amidst the stunning corals, believed to be the best in the whole of East Africa, as well as along the colourful creatures of the sea. A substantial population of sea turtles also nest on the beach and visitors especially enjoy watching the baby turtles trotting towards the sea, just after their shell breaks.

Diani

Nestling along the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya, the Diani Beach Resort is one of Africa’s most popular beach destinations. Visitors can enjoy the azure blue waters, the white sands and many afternoons of sun-soaking in this idyllic resort town that is always bustling with tourists. For excellent snorkelling opportunities, protected waters at Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park off the coast of Wasini Island are the best recommended. One can find as many as 250 species of fish, dolphins, sea turtles, and whales here. Come night, and the languid coasts are transformed into vibrant party places. Wildlife enthusiasts can spend some time at Shimba Hills National Reserve, popular for its population of colobus monkeys, Sable Antelope, and African elephants.

Lamu

The first thing you need to know about this two-mile beach of pristine white sands is that it is on an eponymous car-free island. The next thing to know is that it delivers in spades to the promise of a perfect beach vacation – sand, sand and surf included. Because there are not many sunseekers on the beach at any given time, it is easy to spend hours soaking the sun and lazing around. The Lamu Island is also a great place to know about the living history of Swahili people, and you are best advised to visit the beautiful mosques here during your stay.

Funzi

Seekers of solace can get away from the maddening crowds at the Funzi Beach and still find an eclectic amalgamation of warm waters, white sands, wildlife and culture. There’s no direct method to reach Funzi, and one must take a boat from a village of Bodo for access but the effort made in reaching here is rewarded with great surfing and swimming opportunities. The crocodile safari on the Ramasi River is one of the top recommended experiences. If you fancy it, you can also opt for the guided cultural tour of the area for developing a better understanding of native people, flora and fauna.

Malindi

Just two hours of drive away from Mombasa, Malindi beach resort is one of the most well-connected in the country. A plethora of great hotels, restaurants and bars line up the shores here, catering to a huge mass of tourists that choose Malindi for their beach vacation. The beach is palm-fringed and boasts golden sands. Kite surfers and divers have a great time exploring the marine life at the Malindi Marine National Park.
