Thailand came second on the list, no doubt thanks to its popularity with adventurous backpackers, beaten only by Egypt.

Meanwhile, India ranked sixth – up four places since last year’s figures – and South Africa came in ninth position.

Todd McClamroch, chief executive of iExplore which carried out the poll, remarked: “We continue to see the many of the World Wonders on our list of top destination including the Pyramids in Egypt, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Taj Mahal of India and the Great Wall of China.”
