Taking holidays to Thailand or South Africa this year could avoid the problem that many holidaymakers heading to eurozone destinations are facing – having to take larger amounts of cash with them than ever before.

According to figures from Sainsbury’s, cited by the Travel Counsellors, holidaymakers are having to compensate for the poor exchange rate by taking 36 per cent more euros abroad with them, which could be costly for a large family.

The value of the pound against the euro has dropped by a quarter since March last year, the company pointed out.

Last month, Sean Tipton of the travel association Abta said that more people are now able to take long haul breaks as prices for flights come down.

Indeed, Thailand could be particularly good value as it has its own currency and both food and accommodation are especially cheap.

South Africa is another good-value long haul destination, since its currency currently offers good value against sterling.
