A new joint project has been announced to encourage people to take their holidays in Thailand.

The scheme will be undertaken by the Association of Domestic Travel, the Thai Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association, the Thai Travel Agents Association and the Thai Hotels Association and is aimed at promoting the lesser-known things about the country.

Phornsiri Manoharn, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said this would help to generate more income for local people, the Bangkok Post reports.

Activities will include highlighting traditional ways of life and preserving the natural environment, she added.

Some 113 projects will be carried out, which should increase the revenue generated by foreign tourism by two per cent.

Bangkok, also known as the Land of Smiles, has grown from a backpacker resort to one of Asia’s most popular tourist and business areas, iexplore.com reports.

Thanks to its diverse range of things to do, including shopping, relaxing on the beach and trekking in the jungle, the region caters for all tastes and budgets.
