Many A-level students are pondering their gap year plans after receiving their exam results last week. Now could be an ideal opportunity for students to delay entering the job market or obtaining a degree due to the ongoing economic recession and lack of university places available, according to travel company STA Travel.

The Daily Mail reports that the firm has seen a sharp increase in the number of 18 to 24-year olds planning a year out as well as a rise in older travellers looking to escape the UK for a while. This could boost the numbers looking for cheap flights to Thailand and other exotic locations.

The recent mid-year edition of the Phuket Market Update, published by hospitality consulting firm C9 Hotelworks, concluded that Thailand is enjoying a strong recovery as a destination for travellers.

It is crucial that as well as shopping around for the best travel deals, gap year travellers also need to make sure they fully research their destination and are well equipped for the months ahead.

Richard Oliver, the Year Out Group’s chief executive, explained: “To parents of 18-year-olds straight out of school: please take a greater, if discreet, involvement in what your offspring choose to do during their year out.”
