A new study has revealed that anyone looking for a reasonably-priced holiday destination this year may wish to consider booking flights to South Africa.

The Post Office Sightseeing on a Shoestring research found that South Africa was among the best-value travel destinations in the long-haul category.

A cable car up Cape Town’s Table Mountain was judged to be a great trip for families, since the normal child price is waived for the South African winter months.

Post Office representative Helen Warburton said: “The survey shows that it will pay parents planning sightseeing trips to check out costs in advance to find the best deals.

“We found a wide range of cost-cutting opportunities, which savvy travellers can use to shave money off sightseeing trips.”

Ms Warburton added that pre-paid travel cards could also be used as a money-saving method while on holiday.

Statistics published by the Post Office in April found that many holidaymakers were looking for flights to South Africa thanks to the gains sterling had made against the rand.

It had gained some 21 per cent, meaning that travellers could get more for their money in the country.
