516 graded hotels in South Africa

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGC) has praised the country for its “sophisticated and well-developed” tourism infrastructure.

With 516 graded hotels in the Rainbow Nation, there is a wide range of accommodation on offer from “cheerful and affordable single-star guest houses and inns to luxurious 5-star graded lodges and hotels”, explained the TGC’s marketing and communications manager Thekiso Rakolojane to Hotel News Now.

Historically, South Africa’s problem has been matching quality service with quality accommodation, but Mr Rakolojane said that great strides have been made since the 2010 World Cup.

“This momentum is being maintained through training, education and vocational experience on the ground,” he added.

Tourist numbers during the World Cup boosted visitor figures by 15.1 per cent to 8.1 million and growth was maintained last year with an additional quarter of a million more visiting the country, up 3.3 per cent.

The government has pledged 218 million South African rand (£16.8 million) to attract even more visitors in 2012 and beyond.
