In what is likely to be good news for people planning holidays to South Africa in order to watch the World Cup in 2010, Fifa officials have said that more tickets will be available to fans from the nations of competing teams.

Football’s governing body said that 12 per cent of the total stadium capacity for each game will be available to supporters, up from the eight per cent seen in previous tournaments.

“We have always been criticised for too many tickets going to the fat cats. But we are confident that at least 80 per cent in 2010 will go to the general public,” said Fifa spokesperson David Will.

However, he added, this will only be applicable for the opening stages, with the eight per cent allocation rule returning for the knockout rounds.

Tickets will go on-sale in February 2009 and will be sold with increased security measures to prevent black market sales, including the picking up of tickets only when the buyer gets to South Africa.

Anyone interested in booking flights to South Africa for the World Cup may also be interested to hear that there are only 603 days left until the tournament begins.
