Readers of the Telegraph have voted Australia and South Africa among their favourite holiday destinations in the world.

In a recent poll of over 25,000 people, it was also found that New Zealand and Canada are popular.

Meanwhile, favourite cities included Cape Town and Sydney, the newspaper said.

Some 92 per cent of respondents said the credit crunch will have no effect at all on their destination choices, while more than half said they spent more than £1,000 on their last holiday.

Only 30 per cent of people said they thought taking holidays in the UK as opposed to abroad represented good value for money.

“As Britain enters a new winter of discontent, taking a break may never feel more needed, but the value for money it provides will be scrutinised like never before,” the article attested.

Holidays to Cape Town look to be getting more popular – according to Dumisani Ximbi, mayoral committee member for safety and security for the city, over a million people are expected to visit from November 2008 to January 2009 for South Africa’s peak travel season.
