Located in the heart of the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is a city famous for its culture, history and heritage. The city’s art, hospitality and abundance of attractions, makes it a revered destination among Indians and foreigners alike. Take a look at our list of top attractions which makes the city, one of the most popular destinations in India.

Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort is also billed as the Golden Fort of Rajasthan. Built during the reign of Raja Jaiswal in 1156 AD, it is considered to be one of the largest forts in the world. The reflection of sunlight on the yellow and golden sandstones gives it an enchanting look. With its 99 turrets, the fort looks magnificent at night too. Truly, Jaisalmer Fort is a classic example of the royal architecture of Rajasthan.

Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh, built in the 16th century AD, literally translates into ‘Huge garden’. The construction was started by Maharawal Jait Singh and after his death, was completed by his son Lunakaran. The garden is a memorial to commemorate the nobles and their families. The tranquil atmosphere of the garden allows you to soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings. The best time to visit Bada Bagh is during sunrise and sunset. Make sure you carry a camera.

Sam Sand Dunes

Going on a desert safari on your visit to Jaisalmer is a must and perhaps the best place to start your safari is Sam Sand Dunes. Travelling across the shifting sand dunes on camelback is a memorable experience. If you aren’t comfortable with camelback, opt for a Jeep Safari. The best time to take the safari is during February and March as this is also the time of the Desert Festival. The festival includes camel races, folk dances and other cultural events.

The Thar Heritage Museum

The Thar Heritage Museum, located in the main market of Jaisalmer, is counted amongst the most famous attractions in the city. The museum is full of exhibits depicting the different aspects of the culture, history, architecture and art of the Thar Desert. Sea fossils found in the desert have also been kept in the museum. The fossils suggest that the desert was once a part of the sea. The museum is also home to beautiful ornaments, ancient manuscripts, coins, and weapons.

Silk Route Art Gallery

Silk Route Art Gallery is a place to shop for quality artworks and handicrafts such as bags, clothes, belts, antiques, and intricate patchworks. From clothes to bedcovers and from antiques to accessories, all the knickknacks available in the market are handmade. The Silk Route Art Gallery is a great place to buy souvenirs and the shopping experience is one-of-its-kind here.
