The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), a part of the Taj Hotel Resorts and Palaces, has confirmed plans to develop a new resort in the region.

Based near Shimla, the five acre project will offer 70 rooms as well as two restaurants, a bar and other facilities that could appeal to those taking flights to India.

“We are delighted to announce our Himalayan foray with the signing of the new Gateway Hotel in Shimla. It’s being developed by Mahamaya Infrastructure Private Ltd,” explained IHCL’s managing director and chief executive officer Raymond Bickson.

A statement from IHCL added that the hotel will appeal to both domestic and international travellers, with the state seeing a rise in visitors over the past 12 months from 11 million to 13 million.

The new resort will be Taj’s 39th in India and shows the continued demand for luxury hotel accommodation across the country.

In addition, the company also has a further 16 hotels in the Maldives, Malaysia, Australia, UK, USA, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Africa, Middle East and South Africa.
