India has been voted as one of the top five must-see destinations in the Asia Pacific region, it has been revealed.

According to the Economic Times, a poll commissioned by financial services provider Visa found that 27 per cent of respondents said they rated India as an essential destination.

Other popular places included Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Santanu Mukherjee, country manager for Visa Asia Pacific, said that India has become a popular destination on the global tourist map and had over two million visitors between January and May 2008.

“India has a variety of holiday options to offer – from heritage to adventure holidays and family vacations to relaxing getaways – and is becoming a desired destination for international tourists,” he commented.

Anyone wishing to visit India could consider booking cheap holidays to Goa. This is India’s smallest state in terms of area and the fourth smallest in terms of population.

Renowned for its beaches, temples and world heritage architecture, Goa is visited by hundreds of thousands of international and domestic tourists each year.
