Delhi is gearing up to stage its own Christmas festivities.

As a predominantly Hindu country, India is not a place people would typically associate with Christmas.

But people who book flights to Delhi could find it a great destination if they want to enjoy the festive season in style, the Delhi News Record reports.

A big Christmas tree is being lit in the city’s Business Improvement Area (BIA) and thousands of visitors are expected to turn up for the spectacle.

Locals and holidaymakers who attend on Friday November 16th will also be able to see Santa Claus himself, so it looks set to be full of the festive spirit.

Diane Bertling, spokeswoman for the BIA, noted this is the first time Delhi is staging this event in several years.

“Hopefully we can get a good turnout so then we can make it a tradition, like it was,” she commented.

Ms Bertling added that 24 hours after the lighting of the tree, some live reindeer will be travelling through Delhi, which she promised would be a “novel” sight.
