People going on holidays to Dubai and other long haul destinations may wish to make sure their travel insurance covers lost bags after new statistics were published by InsureandGo.

They show that an average of 1,086 Britons lost luggage every day last year – one every 80 seconds – amounting to 396,000 lost luggage travel insurance claims.

This represented an increase of eight per cent on 2007, making it the second most common cause (after medical issues) for a travel insurance claim.

Perry Wilson, founder of InsureandGo, said: “Unfortunately the average claim value seems to be rocketing, which highlights just how important it is for people to have adequate travel insurance.”

In better news for travellers, the Civil Aviation Authority has revealed that the number of on-time flights at UK airports increased by eight per cent between October and December last year when compared with the same period in 2007.

The average delay across all scheduled flights also reduced by four minutes to an average of 13 minutes.
