Hotels in Sydney are among the most popular in the world, a new study has shown.

Hotels in Sydney are among the most popular in the world, according to a new global report.

A study into hotel occupancy rates carried out in January by STR Global found that Sydney had a 78 per cent occupancy rate across the month.

This put the city in third place globally for hotel room occupancy, coming behind only Dubai in first position and Hong Kong in second.

Commenting on the figures, Accor Hotel Group spokesman Peter Hook said he was surprised by the number, as he had expected it to be higher.

“Our Sydney hotels have been operating at between 83 and 85 per cent occupancy for the last two years,” he said.

He added that since the Olympics in the city during 2000, only two new hotels had been constructed.

Many people staying in Sydney may have headed for its docks recently in order to see the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship dock at the port for the first time.
