Sydney has been voted the world’s fourth-best city in a poll carried out by US magazine Travel and Leisure.

In news which may be of interest to those considering booking flights to Australia, the city, situated on the south-east coast, was also named the best city in the awards for the Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific region.

Anthony Dennis, editor of Travel and Leisure, said the results would be good news for the New South Wales (NSW) region.

“The NSW government has been heavily criticised in recent years for not doing enough to capitalise on the success of events like the 2000 Olympics and the 2003 Rugby World Cup, but this result indicates that Sydney still rates highly among travellers in comparison to other great world cities,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Sydney is the most populous city in Australia, with a metropolitan population of around 4.28 million. The city is built around Port Jackson, which includes Sydney Harbour, leading to the city’s nickname, “the Harbour City”.

It is noted for the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, as well as its beaches.
