More new art galleries could be created in Sydney after calls were made by the new director of the region’s art institutions.

People on flights to Sydney could in future have a larger and more diverse range of art to see during their trip, as the new director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales said he wants there to be more gallery space in the city.

Speaking on his new appointment to the role, Dr Michael Brand said his current priority is to expand the gallery, which is currently well-stocked with works of art.

He explained that taking over from Edmond Capon, who had been in the role for 30 years, meant he had to create his own legacy after Mr Capon built up an impressive collection of works.

“I mean it is no big secret that everyone knows the building, knows the gallery is short of space, knows that Edmund has used every single square inch of the building,” Mr Brand added.

People on flights to Sydney have a range of amazing arts events to experience in the city, with The Lion King set to be staged there again at the end of 2013.
