If travelling to a faraway destination then it’s a good idea to ensure that the family is fully immunised, Asta suggested.

When it comes to a long flight to Australia or other holiday destinations, it might be a good idea to pack a “surprise toy” as well as plenty to keep them entertained during the journey.

Allowing extra time for things such as checking-in at the airport may also be advisable, especially if children need to be taken out of pushchairs and prams for security checks, it added.

Family holidays were the second most popular type of holiday booked by UK travellers last year – making up 37 per cent of all bookings – according to statistics from Mintel.
