Holidaymakers with a love of culture may wish to book flights to Australia for October.

Between October 9th and 25th, the city will host the Melbourne International Arts Festival, a celebration of performing and visual arts and a flagship cultural event.

Patti Smith is to headline the festival, which will also feature acts from all over the world, including Holland, Turkey, Israel and the UK.

Officials say they expect over half a million people to attend, having seen the same amount at last year’s event.

The festival was originally staged as the third Spoleto Festival in 1986, but it soon developed an individual identity.

It remains the only festival in Australia to feature such an international programme.

Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia, being home to around 3.8 million people in 2007.

Located around Port Phillip Bay in Australia’s south-east, the city is the state capital of Victoria.
