Air New Zealand (Air NZ) has reported growth in passenger numbers during the month of August.Figures show that there has been an increase in both domestic and international seat sales compared to the same period in 2009.

In total, Air NZ carried 978,000 people last month – an increase of 5.9 per cent compared to August last year.

There was also evidence that more people are opting for long-haul flights to New Zealand with the carrier, with a 14.2 per cent rise on Asia/Japan/UK routes. Data also revealed a 0.7 per cent increase in capacity on the airline’s North America/UK flights.

Figures from Statistics New Zealand show the number of visitor arrivals in the country in August stood at 168,100 – four per cent higher than in August 2009 and the highest ever for an August month.

Overall, the seasonally adjusted data showed that visitor arrivals have surpassed the previous high recorded in November 2009.
